Defiance, Ohio: The Rachael Reese Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Gold Award recipient Kristen Lockmiller. A nursing student at The University of Toledo, Ms. Lockmiller earned her Gold Award in 2014. The Gold Award is the highest earned honor in the Girl Scouts of the USA. Her Gold Award Project benefitted Children’s Lantern, an organization dedicated to helping children and others in distress. She is active in her school, church and community.
Presented for the first time in 2018, the Reese scholarship is available to any young lady who has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award and has completed at least one year of college coursework. Preference is given to applicants who are attending Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio with additional preference afforded to any applicant who is a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford, NC.
The annual scholarship award was established in memory of Rachael Reese, a Junior attending Heidelberg University, when she tragically died in a car accident in 2015. She dedicated her short life to the service of God and others around her. By all accounts, Rachael had a contagious smile, demonstrated genuine care for others and was perpetually goofy. She loved helping those around her as was evident from her mission trips, international travel, and her Girl Scout career which culminated in her earning the Gold Award - Girl Scouting’s highest achievement. Her project was a community prayer garden.
The Rachael Reese Memorial Scholarship is administered by Responsible Adventures, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public foundation that encourages young people to make positive decisions and to engage in positive activities. For more information visit www.responsibleadventures.org.
